How to Choose the Right E-Board for You?

Electric skateboards (e-boards, esk8) are gaining more and more popularity every year. They’re a great way to move around the city quickly and eco-friendly, and also an exciting form of recreation. If you’re just starting out or want to upgrade your gear, one key question comes up: how do you choose the right e-board for yourself? In this article, we present the most important criteria you need to consider – so that your decision is informed and your purchase successful.

Why is it worth riding an e-board?

Before we get into the features of specific models, it’s worth remembering that esk8 is more than just an electronic gadget. It’s also:

  • fast and convenient city commuting,

  • no traffic jams and low commuting costs,

  • a high level of riding fun,

  • an eco-friendly alternative to a car.

1. Define your needs and riding style

The most important step is matching the board to how and where you plan to ride.

Ask yourself a few questions:

Will you ride mainly in the city?

Choose a street board with smaller, harder wheels – perfect for smooth asphalt.

Or maybe outside the city or on uneven terrain?

Consider an AT (All-Terrain) model with large pneumatic wheels, better cushioning and stability.

Do you prefer high speed or relaxed cruising?

  • For dynamic riding choose boards with more power and higher top speed.

  • For daily commuting, more economical and predictable models work best.

2. Pay attention to motor power

Motor power is one of the most important parameters of an e-board. It determines acceleration, speed and climbing ability.

Remember: Motors and ESC determine speed and acceleration, but the battery must be strong enough to deliver the required current and maintain voltage — otherwise it will limit performance.

Types of drives

  • Hub motors – motors inside the wheels, quiet and energy-efficient, ideal for beginners.

  • Belt drive – belt drive offering more power, better torque and more “surf-like” riding feel.

  • Gear drive – durable and powerful, for riders seeking a maintenance-free setup for demanding terrain.

The higher the power (measured in watts), the better the board performs on hills and at higher speeds.

3. Battery – range, performance and safety

The battery is the heart of your e-board, and its parameters directly determine how long and how efficiently you can ride. A larger battery means longer range, better voltage stability and less wear on the cells.

Capacity (Ah / Wh)

The higher the capacity, the longer the range. A typical city board offers 10–20 km, while premium models can reach 40–60 km.

Voltage (number of cells – 10S, 12S etc.)

Higher voltage improves acceleration, torque and top speed. That’s why high-performance boards often run on 12S or even 14S batteries.

Cell quality (Samsung, Molicel, LG)

Premium cells ensure better performance, lower voltage sag and longer lifespan. Avoid boards with unknown or unbranded cells.

4. Deck shape and flexibility

The deck determines your riding comfort, stability and control. Its shape and flexibility strongly impact how the board behaves at different speeds.

  • Flexible decks – absorb vibrations, great for cruising and comfort.

  • Stiff decks – more stable at high speeds and off-road riding.

  • Drop-through / drop-down – lower center of gravity for greater stability.

5. Trucks and wheels

These components affect maneuverability, grip and ride comfort. Good trucks ensure stability, while proper wheels adapt the board to your riding style.

Trucks:

  • Traditional kingpin (TKP) – agile and responsive.

  • Reverse kingpin (RKP) – more stable at high speeds, ideal for esk8.

Wheels:

  • Street wheels – small, hard, ideal for smooth pavement.

  • AT wheels – large pneumatic tires for rough or uneven terrain.

6. ESC – the “brain” of the board

The ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) is one of the most underrated yet most important components. It controls acceleration, braking and the overall smoothness of the ride.

Two main types:

  • Hobbywing – smooth, predictable, great for beginners.

  • VESC – highly customizable, powerful, ideal for advanced riders.

Summary – how to choose the perfect e-board?

To choose the right board, think about how and where you’ll ride, and consider the key components: motor power, battery quality, deck construction, trucks, wheels and the ESC. A well-matched e-board offers comfort, performance and safety – and above all, pure riding joy.
