Wheels and Trucks in Electric Skateboards – What You Should Know Before You Buy
WHEELS
✔ Size matters
Larger wheels (90–120 mm) handle bumps, cracks, and curbs better. They're ideal for city riding, especially on older or uneven pavement.
Smaller wheels (70–85 mm) offer more board feel and better maneuverability, but aren’t great for rough terrain.
✔ Hardness (durometer)
Harder wheels (like 90A) give you more speed and durability, but less grip and comfort.
Softer wheels (like 75A) grip better and absorb shocks – perfect for bumpy roads.
✔ Material
Most e-skate wheels are made from polyurethane (PU). Some off-road boards use pneumatic (air-filled) tires – these are great for dirt, sand, or gravel but are heavier and drain more battery.
TRUCKS – All about stability
✔ What are trucks?
They’re the metal axles that connect the wheels to the deck. Their quality and geometry affect steering, stability, and ride feel.
✔ Reverse Kingpin vs Traditional Kingpin
-
Reverse kingpin – better for stability and carving at speed. Standard in e-skateboards.
-
Traditional kingpin – tighter turns at slow speeds, less common in e-skate setups.
✔ Truck width
Wider trucks = more stability at higher speeds.
Narrower trucks = better turning radius, but less stable.
Why it matters
Even with the best motor and battery, a bad wheel/truck setup can ruin your ride. For example:
-
Wheels too hard = every crack in the road becomes a problem
-
Trucks too narrow = unstable at speed
-
Wrong combination = more vibrations = faster battery drain
Our beginner recommendations:
-
Wheels: 90–100 mm diameter, soft (78A–85A) – a great city setup
-
Trucks: Reverse kingpin, 180–200 mm width – stable and smooth
-
For off-road riding: consider switching to pneumatic wheels
Upgrade? Definitely possible!
If you already own a board but want better comfort or control – start with wheels and trucks. It’s a relatively easy upgrade with noticeable results.
E-skateboarding is not just about motors and batteries. Every component plays a role. Wheels and trucks are your connection to the road – treat them well, and your ride will feel amazing.
